Where I'm From...

I am from canning jars, Pinesol and Spray ‘n’ Wash, Cornhuskers Lotion and Boraxo soap.

I am from Skagit Valley: loggers, tulips, gray and rainy, green, vibrant, moist.

I am from rhododendrons and hydrangeas, Christmas cactus fuchsia and poinsettia red.

I am from Thanksgiving bounty and Christmas adoration. From pecan pies, mincemeat stars, and green olives with pimento.

I am from sneaking the car out for midnight junk-food runs; giggling, bickering sisters; love and belonging.

I am from a Navy man and a singer: a Vietnam vet and a woman pastor.

I am from camping at Hutchinson Creek and Baker Lake, dump runs with ice cream cones, Saucy’s pizza and Hal’s drive-in.

I am from “We’re proud of you!” and “Aren’t you ever going to clean this room?!”.

I am from Sedro Woolley Public Library: Trixie Belden, Anne of Green Gables, Betsy-Tacy, Little Women, Nancy Drew.

I am from Immaculate Heart of Mary and Bethel Assembly of God: mystery and celebration.

I am from potato salad, fried chicken, turkey and rice soup, ice cream sundaes, and homemade caramel corn.

I am from Andrea, Debra, and Marni: trips to the ballet and Dick’s Drive-in. From Marcy Purcell Roller-skating Nights and Father-Daughter Mariners’ games.

I am from spelling bees and essay contests, choir and drama, running next door for piano lessons once a week.

I am from dusty theatres, greasepaint, and two-minute costume changes. From Shakespeare and Cole Porter, A Comedy of Errors and Anything Goes.

I am from picking up filberts, raking maple leaves, mowing the lawn, and weeding flowerbeds.

I am from honest hard work and honest fun. Trivial Pursuit, Hand and Foot, and the tire-swing in the maple. Jigsaw puzzles and working out in the shop.

I am from a place of grace and mercy.

I found this idea at Fragments From Floyd by way of Semicolon. Floyd has guidelines on how to write your own if you're interested. Let me know if you do so I can read it! (I didn't exactly follow his formula, though I used it for ideas.)
